Description of series:
This series consists of correspondence files maintained by Joseph (Joe) Aloysius Lyons as Leader of the newly established United Australia Party (UAP), following his defection from the Australian Labor Party in early 1931. The series effectively ends in December the same year, when the UAP won the general election and Lyons became Prime Minister. The ten files contain personal representations to Lyons by individuals and organisations and his replies, and include correspondence with other public figures. The correspondence covers Lyons' stand against the Scullin Government, the All for Australia League, loan conversions and other financial proposals, industry, various Tasmanian issues, pensions and unemployment. It was originally filed alphabetically but only files I to P and S are in this series. The missing files may be found in CP103/19.
History Prior/Subsequent to Transfer:
The correspondence in this series was transferred from the Prime Minister's Department to archival custody at the Kingston Store on 2 April 1947 and given the job number RW2/1/36. Between this date and 1953, when it was moved to the Archives Division's Parkes Annexe, it was given the accession number CP30 (ref. RWC2/8/2). Item 10 was added to the accession on 29 August 1956. It had been found in the National Library's Eastlake hut on 9 July 1956, with material now in CP30/3, apparently having gone there in error during the shift from the Kingston Store to Parkes. The series description was revised as part of the Prime Minister's Papers' Project in December 2001.
