Description of series:
The cables and related papers in this series originated in the Prime Minister's Office. The cables were primarily exchanged between Joseph Aloysius Lyons as Prime Minister and Stanley Melbourne Bruce, then High Commissioner in London, and between Lyons and Dr Earle Page. The latter cables relate particularly to the period in 1937 when Lyons was in London for the Imperial Conference and Page was Acting Prime Minister. The series also includes some cables from R G Casey, R G Menzies, Sir George Pearce, the UK Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, heads of foreign governments and Prime Minister's Department staff.
The subjects covered in the cables include the 1936 International Sugar Conference, 1937 Imperial Conference, International Labour Conference and 40 hour week, Treaty of Locarno and the international situation, Royal Commission on Monetary and Banking Systems, national insurance and other government business.
The records were transferred to archival custody by the Prime Minister's Department in 1953 (ref. RWC2/1/50), and the series description revised as part of the Prime Ministers Papers' Project in January 2002.
