Series note
Description of series:
This series is part of the correspondence of Joseph Aloysius Lyons as Prime Minister (1932-1939) and, to some extent, as Leader of the Opposition (1931). However, most of the correspondence relates to his first term as Prime Minister (1932-1934). It includes representations from business and community organisations, state and local governments, newspapers, political colleagues and other public figures, and many from or on behalf of individuals. Most of the latter relate to pensions and employment.

The 1932-1934 correspondence complements another set of Lyons' correspondence (CP30/3). In both cases, the correspondence has been maintained in annual files, one or more for each letter of the alphabet. The papers are arranged alphabetically by correspondent within each file, with the name of the correspondent pencilled onto the top left hand corner. Some have earlier papers attached. The 1931 files are actually the 'missing' files from another series (CP30/2). A few subject files have more in common with a third series (CP167/2). These concern broadcasting, conversion bonds, sale of scrap iron to Japan, Silver Jubilee medals, sugar and Western Australian iron ore deposits. CP103/19 also includes a small amount of more personal correspondence and a file of condolences on Lyons' death in April 1939. Two files of correspondence addressed to Mrs Enid Lyons are photocopies of original papers now in her collection in the National Library. Another file contains her notes for a speech relating to the Western Australian Secession Campaign.

The records were transferred to archival custody from the Prime Minister's Department in 1945 (ref. RWC2/1/22), and a single number system of control subsequently imposed. In October 2002, as part of the Prime Ministers Papers' Project, CP103/19 was substantially re-ordered and the files re-numbered. This followed the division of several large folders into smaller files and corrections to the alphabetical order of the papers in them. The series description was also revised at that time.
