Career within Commonwealth
Wayne Maxwell Swan was born in Nambour, Queensland and educated at Nambour
High School and the University of Queensland. Before entering federal politics
he was a lecturer in public administration at the Queensland Institute of
Technology (1976-1977, 1981-1982 and 1985-1988) and, for a short time, was a
policy analyst in the Office of Youth Affairs (1978). He has also been an
adviser to several Australian political figures and State Secretary of the
Australian Labor Party in Queensland since 1991.
First elected to the House of Representatives in 1993, as the member for
Lilley (Qld), Swan was defeated at the general elections in 1996. During this
first period in Parliament, he served on two Standing Committees relating to
Electoral Matters and Transport, Communications and Infrastructure (1993-1996).
Swan was re-elected to the seat of Lilley in 1998 and appointed to the
Shadow Ministry responsible for the Shadow portfolio of Family and Community
Services (1998-2000 and 2001-2004). He was Manager of Opposition Business in
the House of Representatives (2001-2003) and, following the October 2004
election, became Shadow Treasurer.
Following the 2007 Federal Election, Wayne Swan was appointed Treasurer from
3 December 2007.
