Career within Commonwealth
Warren Edward Snowdon was born in Canberra on 20 March 1950 where he
completed his schooling before working in the Australian Public Service for
three years.
Periods of study have seen Snowdon graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from
the Australian National University (ANU) and a Diploma of Education from
Murdoch University.
His academic career has included two and a half years working as a
researcher with Nugget Coombs and Maria Brandl on the
Aboriginal Children and Families Heritage project at the ANU. This research, which involved extended
periods in Pitjantjatjara communities in Central Australia, was published in:

This experience with Aboriginal communities was augmented during his
four years as Senior Project Officer for the Central Land Council.
Since moving to the Northern Territory in 1976, his research and project
work has been interwoven with a career in education, both as a secondary
teacher and in Special Education in the Northern Territory and in the
post-secondary arena as a tutor and part-time lecturer in such areas as Public
Administration, Politics and History.
Snowdon has over the years actively pursued a range of community
interests through such groups as the Australian Council for Civil Liberties,
the Australian Conservation Foundation, Amnesty International and Trades and
Labour Councils.
Snowdon was elected as the MHR for the Northern Territory in 1987 and
was re-elected in 1990 and 1993.He was defeated in the 1996 election and
re-elected in 1998. Following the 2000
electoral redistribution for Lingiari, he was
re-elected 2001, 2004 and 2007. He is
the first Member of Parliament to represent Lingiari.
Appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Transport and
Communications in 1990, Snowdon transferred in that capacity to the Employment,
Education and Training portfolio in May 1992, being reappointed in this
position by Prime Minister Keating following the 1993 election. On 3 December
2007 he was appointed Minister for Defence Science and Personnel by Prime
Minister Kevin Rudd and held this position until his appointment as Minister
for Indigenous Health, Rural and Regional Health and Regional Services Delivery
on 9 June 2009.
Snowdon's Parliamentary work has included representation on Committees
and Working Groups covering such areas as Aboriginal Affairs, Primary Industry,
Foreign Affairs and Defence and Social Justice, with a portfolio representation
on the Cabinet Social Justice Committee.
