Peter Alexander Walsh was born in Kellerberrin, Western Australia on 11 March 1935. Before entering Federal Parliament, he was the Secretary of the ALP Branch in Kellerberrin (1966-74).
Elected an ALP Senator for Western Australia in 1974 (term deemed to have begun 1 July 1973), Walsh was re-elected in 1975, 1977, 1983 and 1987. He retired from Parliament on 30 June 1993 (the date his term expired).
During his political career, Senator Walsh held three portfolios: Minister for Resources and Energy (1983-84), Minister for Finance (1984-90) and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Public Service Matters (1984-87). He also served on several Parliamentary Committees, including those relating to Industry and Trade (1974-81), Senate Estimates and Finance and Public Administration (1974-83 and 1990-93), Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Appropriation and Staffing, and Transport, Communications and Infrastructure (1990-93).
As a member of the Opposition Shadow Ministry from 29 December 1977 to 11 March 1983, Senator Walsh was Spokesman on various matters including Administrative Services (1977-78), Primary Industry (1977-80), Finance, Trade and National Development (less Decentralisation, and Urban Development and Local Government) (1980-83) and Resources and Energy (1983). He was also a member of several overseas delegations including a Parliamentary Exchange visit to New Zealand (1982) and made official visits to the USA, UK, France, Denmark and Sweden (1983), China and Japan (1984), Europe and USA (1988) and the USA (January 1990).
