Anthony (Tony) Eggleton was born in Swindon, England in 1932 and was educated at King Alfred's College, Wantage, Berkshire.
Early in his career, Eggleton became involved in the field of media and communications and was Director of Naval Public Relations in Canberra (1960-65). As Press Secretary to the Prime Minister (1965-71), he served Sir Robert Menzies, Harold Holt and John Gorton, and was also Press Supervisor for the 1970 Royal Tour. Eggleton was subsequently Director of Information in the Commonwealth Secretariat, London (1971-74) and Adviser to the Government on Commonwealth of Nations Affairs (1976-83).
Eggleton held several positions for the Liberal Party of Australia, including Director of Communications and Special Adviser to the Leader of the Opposition (1974-75) and Federal Director and Campaign Director for the Federal Elections (1975-90). He was also Foundation President of the National Press Club in Canberra.
Since leaving the political arena, Eggleton has held appointments with CARE International (Secretary-General, 1991-95; Board Member since 2002) and CARE Australia (Director since 1996; Vice-Chairman since 2002). Other appointments include Executive Secretary (1982-84) and Chairman (since 1998) of the Asia Pacific Democratic Union; Chief Executive of the National Council for the Centenary of Federation (1996-2002); a Member of the Foreign Affairs Editorial Advisory Board (since 1999), a Member of the Foreign Affairs Aid Advisory Council and Chair of the C E W Bean (War Correspondent) Foundation (since 2002).
Tony Eggleton was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 1970 and an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 1991; was a recipient of the Centenary of Federation Medal in 2003 and has received other awards.
