The Hon John Brown was elected to the House of Representatives seat of Parramatta in 1977 as a member of the Australian Labor Party. He was elected to the Opposition Shadow Ministry on 7 November 1980 and appointed as spokesman for Business and Consumer Affairs, Tourism, Physical Fitness and Sport from 23 November 1980 until the election of the Hawke Labor Government on 5 March 1983. Until his retirement from federal politics in February 1990, Mr Brown held several portfolios either as a minister or as minister assisting the minister.
