Neil O'Sullivan was born in Brisbane and educated at St Joseph's College, Nudgee, Queensland. He was admitted to the Bar as a Solicitor in 1922. Some years later, he was President of the Brisbane Chamber of Commerce (1935-36), a member of the Property Owners Association (1937-38), a Director of Coolangatta Electric Supply Coy Ltd, Broadcasters (Aust) Pty Ltd and of various other companies. During World War II, he served with the Royal Australian Air Force (1942-44), and attained the rank of Flying Officer.
In September 1946, O'Sullivan was elected a Liberal Party Senator for Queensland (taking his seat from 1 July 1947). He was Deputy Leader of the Opposition (1947-49) and Leader of the Government in the Senate (1949-59). He retired from federal politics in June 1962.
During his Parliamentary career, O'Sullivan was Minister for Trade and Customs (1949-56), Minister for the Navy (1956), Attorney General and Vice-President of the Federal Executive Council (1956-58). He also served on several committees (see related agencies) and led Australian delegations to the International Sugar Conference in London (1953) and, with John McEwen, to GATT meetings in Geneva (1954). He attended the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 as a Royal guest.
Sir Neil O'Sullivan was knighted (KBE) in 1959 and died in 1968.
