Hon Doug McClelland
Career within Commonwealth
Douglas McClelland was born on 5 August 1926 in
Wentworthville, New South Wales. He was
educated at the Parramatta Boys' High School and then at the Metropolitan
Business College. He enlisted in the 2nd
Australian Imperial Force on 10 August 1944 and served in the Northern
Territory as Corporal with the 7th Workshop and Park Company from June 1946
until his discharge on 30 January 1947.
After leaving the AIF, McClelland was a Clerk in the New
South Wales Public Service and a New South Wales and Commonwealth Court
Reporter, employed by the Attorney-General's Department.
From 1955 to 1959 he was the Secretary of the Barton
Electorate Council and from 1957 to 1961 a number of the New South Wales State
Executive of the Australian Labor Party.
In 1961 he was elected to the Senate for New South Wales. As Senator he has served on various Senate
Select Committees and Joint Select Committees and represented Australia at
overseas conferences (see related agencies).
On 19 December 1972, on the coming to power of the
Australian Labor Party, McClelland was summoned to be a member of the Federal
Executive Council and became the Minister for the Department of the Media (CA
1481). After a Cabinet reorganization,
he became Minister for the Department of the Special Minister of State on 6
June 1975 occupying this position until 11 November 1975 when the Australian
Labor Party lost office.
From 1987 to 1991 he was Australian High Commissioner to the
United Kingdom, Commissioner General Australian Expo 1992, Chairman Australian
Political Exchange Council 1992 to 1995 and Chairman Old Parliament House
Redevelopment Committee Canberra 1993 to 1995.
Doug McClelland was made a companion of the Order of
Australia on 8 June 1987 and awarded the Centenary Medal on 1 January 2001.
