Douglas Nixon Everingham was elected to the House of Representatives for Capricornia, Queensland, at a by-election 30 September 1967. He was re-elected at subsequent general elections 1969 and 1972.
He was Labor Minister for Health from 19 December 1972 until the appointment of the Liberal caretaker ministry on 12 November 1975, following the dissolution of Parliament on 11 November. Dr Everingham lost his seat in the House of Representatives at the general elections held 13 December 1975.
Dr Everingham was Secretary of the NSW Public Medical Officers Association in 1950; Vice-President of the Queensland Marriage Guidance Council in 1960 and the Queensland Sub-Normal Children's Welfare Association. He is Chairman of the Rockhampton Peace Committee and Citizens Conference. He is a Trustee of the Spelling Action Society, of the Bliss Institute (Coogee, NSW) and the Benevolent Society, Rockhampton.
Dr Everingham had also been elected a vice-president of the
World Health Organisation on 14 May 1975 at the World Health Assembly in Geneva.
