The Commonwealth Investigation Service (CA 650) took over the functions of the Investigation Branch (CA 747) in August 1946. The agency functioned as the Commonwealth Government's policy body. It maintained liaison with customs, postal, taxation and State or international police services, and provided personnel as requested for special investigations relating to industrial disputes. It also provided a translation service for Government Departments and investigated newspapers and other publications in foreign languages. The relationship between the Service in Victoria and domestic security or surveillance agencies such as ASIO is subject to further research, as are details of the office's staffing and organisation.
The Commonwealth Investigation Service ceased operations on 21 April 1960 when the Commonwealth Police Force [II] absorbed its operations.Historical agency address
