The Department of the Environment, Aborigines and the Arts (its name being changed from the Department of the Vice-President of the Executive Council) was assigned in 1971 the functions of:
 
(1) activities related to the environment;
(2) aboriginal affairs;
(3) support for the arts and letters;
(4) the National Library;
(5) Australian films;
(6) national Archives;
(7) general services of printing, publishing and advertising 
    (including the Gazette)
(8) world expositions;
(9) grants to national organizations;
(10) overseas visits;
(11) War Memorial and War Graves; and
(12) overseas property.
 
The Department took over in 1971 the establishment of the Department of the Vice-President of the Executive Council - two divisions (Arts and General, Office of the Environment) and an Establishments and Finance Branch
 
On 19 December 1972 the Department was abolished by the incoming Labor Party government and its functions and subordinate agencies were transferred to the following departments:

 Aboriginal Affairs, Environment and Conservation, Media, Prime
 Minister and Cabinet, Special Minister of State, Science and
 Services and Property.
