Function and purpose
This series consists of large foolscap and double foolscap sheets giving details of crew and passengers of ships entering and departing the Port of Newcastle, NSW. The list was generally prepared by the Master of the vessel, but some cases exist of the Shipping Company having prepared the list. On occasion, outward crew lists from the last port of call (in particular Brisbane, Melbourne, Auckland, and Hobart) were attached, as were Medical Certificates for the health of the crew. Manifests and Quarantine documents were also attached on occasion.
Details shown on the Crew and Passenger Lists are: Ship's name, ShipsRegisteredPort, Name of Master, Tonnage, Last Port of Call, Date, Seaman's Name, Station, Age, Nationality, Names of Passengers, Description and Remarks.
Details on the form "Account and Charges in the Crew etc" are divided into two parts.
Part I, Headed Seaman who have died, deserted or otherwise left the Ship, with sub-titles as follows:
1. Christian Names at length; surname
2. Age
3. Place of Birth
4. Name of last ship and port she belonged to
5. Date and place of Death, Desertion, or leaving ship
6. Occasion of absence
Part II, Headed Substitutes, with sub-titles as follows:

2. Age
3. Place of Birth
4. Name of Official number of last ship

(c) 1921 larger form, again Form 23 Under Immigration Act

System of arrangement and control
Note on arrangement of lists in consignment C667/T1:
The lists in consignment C667/T1 contain various dates of arrival in various ports eg. Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane etc. as well as Newcastle, which was the last port of call. The first boxes of early C667/T1 lists were arranged by date of arrival in Newcastle but lists from c.1905 onwards (contained in archives type 10 boxes) had no discernable order of arrangement. In November 2001, the National Archives' Sydney Office began the process of re-arranging the whole consignment by date of arrival in Newcastle.
Additional information
Lists till the end of 1896 have been microfilmed by the National Archives of Australia and can be viewed in Sydney, Perth and Canberra (check with your state office to see which lists they hold). Please note that only our Canberra office has rolls dated after 1884. Some gaps may occur, for example, there are no crew/passenger lists between 1 June 1883 and 1 July 1883.
