Function and purpose
This series comprises log books (diaries) recording the daily activities and duties performed by staff at the Quarantine Station. Principal activities include: physical maintenance of the premises, the cleaning and washing-out of individual rooms, electrical and mechanical repair work and maintenance of equipment. Examples of other activities include preparation of water (for bathing passengers), disinfection of bales of goat hair or indian wool, and how much coal was consumed or issued.
Very little information is recorded concerning the passengers and that which is occasionally recorded is general rather than specific. One example includes the entry for 21 June 1960: "disinfected 18 passenger cases from AS MV OCEANIA, foot and mouth, 2 hours". Another entry records "Dr Spears visited patient in Observation and took blood tests", and the entry for 5 June 1955 records "MV SKAUGUM with 900 Greek migrants. 520 pieces of cabin baggage .. dispatched. Heavy rain all day".
System of arrangement and control
This series is arranged chronologically and numerically by single volume number. The volume numbers have been imposed by the National Archives of Australia.
