This series consists of 17.5mm, 35mm, 1/2inch, 1inch and 2inch sprocketed magnetic film from which the mono or stereo quarter inch master tapes were mixed and which are controlled as a separate series. This series is arranged by a two number system with the first number representing a year and the second number being consecutive numbers as follows:
19.000 = 1965/66
20.000 = 1966/67
21.000 = 1967/68
22.000 = 1968/69
23.000 = 1969/70
24.000 = 1970/71
25.000 = 1971/72
26.000 = 1972/73
27.000 = 1973/74
28.000 = 1974/75
29.000 = 1975/76
30.000 = 1976/77
31.000 = 1977/78
The series is incomplete, many of these recordings have decayed and have been disposed of, also, not all music track masters were acquired from the recording studios for the collection. It has to be assumed that these no longer exist.
The music from these various multi-track masters has been mixed down to quarter inch tape which now constitute what is known as the Film Australia Music Masters. These tapes are currently held in the Sydney Office of the National Film and Sound Archive pending finalisation of the Film Australia Music Heritage Project for the Centenary of Cinema and will eventually be transferred into Archives custody as a new series.
This series is part of a collection of records which consist of original music written for films produced at Film Australia and its predecessors from 1946 to 1988. The collection is unique as it constitutes a large body of Australian composition.
Three different systems of control have been used for these multi-track masters between 1946 and 1988 they are:
- Single number series (C4663) from 01 July 1947 to 01 July 1965
- Two number series (C4664) from 01 July 1965 to 01 July 1978
- Annual single series (C4666) from 01 July 1978 to 31 July 1988
