This series of photographs and negatives was compiled from a
dismantled photograph album relating to Customs House, Sydney,
and other sources.
It includes mounted original photographs in sepia, prints in
black and white and colour, and reproductions of original
photographs, drawings and lithographs. These items are held in
labelled envelopes, and about half of the photographs have
negatives filed with them. A separate list of their contents
has been prepared.
The views are of Customs House buildings in Sydney from 1830
onwards, most being of the Circular Quay building. Some
interior views are included. A few prints show the entire
Circular Quay area, earlier ones with sailing ships in the
foreground. Some prints are of Customs House decorated for
various occasions, for instance for Federation 1901, Victory
Celebrations in 1919 and the Royal Visit in 1963.
There is a copy of a drawing from the Sydney Mail of 14/1/1888
purporting to show 'the old [first] Customs House, Sydney'.
Whether this idealised artist's impression represents the colony's
first Customs House is unconfirmed.
These items are part of the Australian Customs Service Historical
Collection identified as accession numbers NSW 00292,325,756,915
& 916 on the Collection's inventory database.
