This series consists of albums labelled 'News [or] Newspaper Cuttings'. Extant holdings are numbered 1-27, with the earliest content being printed extracts of minutes of proceedings from the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Newspaper cuttings date from 1897 and some albums are devoted to one issue, while others cover several.
They are in varying condition from good to poor. Many have folded or loose cuttings and several have torn or decaying pages. The name N. Lockyer (NSW Collector of Customs, c.1900) appears in the front of some. Most cuttings are dated and have the name of the newspaper noted. Some albums have a subject index at the front.
The cuttings cover a range of subjects relevant to Customs: tariffs and duties, immigration, customs prosecutions and administration, land and income tax assessment acts, opium trafficking and illicit stills, and Federation in Australia as it related to customs issues - in particular the free-trade vs. protectionism debate. 16 of the albums cover the years 1900 and 1901, and their cuttings report parliamentary debates, public speeches of parliamentarians in different states and the Commonwealth Bill debate in the British House of Commons.
These items are part of the Australian Customs Service Historical Collection identified as accession numbers NSW 00168-00194 on the Collection's inventory database.
