This series was compiled from an assortment of material collected by the Post Office's Historical Section from a variety of Departmental sources over many years prior to its closure in 1988. Much of this material was in the form of loose documentation detached from pre-existing files decades ago. The rest was composed of incomplete files, many of which had been top-numbered.
To facilitate management of the series, the pre-existing files have, where possible, been reconstituted from the detached folios. Where this was not feasible, the loose documentation has been amalgamated to form new files arranged according to subject.
The subjects identified include: the administration of post offices (in alphabetical order), postage stamps, the telegraph, telephones, radio and television licences, money orders, staff matters, mail services and miscellaneous correspondence dealing with the flying of flags, Royal visits and Ministerial matters.
The series is far from complete but it is nevertheless significant in view of the age and scope of the material contained therein.
