This series was created by the former Historical section of the Postmaster-General’s
Dept. in order to preserve a diverse range of post office records dating from
the mid nineteenth century. On transfer, the records consisted of several
parcels of files and loose documentation wrapped in brown paper, each bundle
bearing a brief description of its contents and a bundle number.
Contents of each bundle is varied but an example would include Register of
Appointments to GPO Sydney from 1858-1879, administration files, accounts,
telephone services, contracts, robberies, transcripts of the Royal Commission
into Postal Services (1908-09) etc.
The records were not in any type of order apart from each bundle being
numbered.
