Function and purpose

This series consists of two folders of loose, unregistered correspondence relating to volunteers for active service in the first and second contingents to the South African War. The folders include correspondence from the 1st Australian Infantry Regiment to its various companies seeking volunteers; nominal rolls and correspondence from individual companies showing those who have volunteered for active service; and correspondence from individual men volunteering for service.
