These are tri-separation positives of the Australian Colour Diary series which were produced by Mr J S Allan between 1954 and 1973. The Australian Colour Diary series was made along the same lines as the "Australian Diaries" (b/w) which had been produced on a regular basis from 1946 onwards. The diaries ran approximately 1,000 feet, generally lasted about 10 minutes and contained a number of newsreel type items. They were featured regularly on the Hoyts circuit in Australia and were shown in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and elsewhere, as well as on television in the United States of America.
Tri separation positives were made, largely contemporaneously with the actual productions to ensure presentation of colour film. For each production there are three separation positives, made on black and white film, through cyan, yellow and magenta filters. From these, a composite colour print of the film may be reconstituted as required. The inter-positives were made from the original negatives. Duplicate negatives can be made from these to be used to make release prints.
