Function and Purpose

The series consists of dossiers compiled for those persons investigated in NSW during World War II. Dossiers, one for each person, were arranged numerically, with all papers being placed in large envelopes.

Files contain various documents that would have been used in the investigation of individuals. Documents include: search warrants, arrest warrants and internment warrants, naturalisation applications, enemy alien investigation material, repatriation of German internees, hearing extracts, witness statements, parole forms, internee property sheets, travel permits, outcomes of applications and investigations and general correspondence.

The dossiers were originally created by the NSW State Police, Military Police Intelligence Section until 1942; at that date their creation was the responsibility of the Security Service. After WWII many dossiers were top numbered into Criminal Investigation Files, single number series (created by the Investigation Branch; see SP1714/1, ST1233/1).  Other dossiers were transferred to ASIO.

Most of the dossiers refer to un-naturalized aliens, particularly 'enemy' aliens, and refugees eg; German, Polish, Italians and other subjects include naturalized aliens, British citizens and Australians.
