Items medium note
This series consists of volumes of copies ofoutward letters, minutes and circulars from the Chief Postmaster, Melbourne, to the Superintendent of Port Phillip District, the Postmaster General Sydney, post offices, other government agencies, such as the Clerk of Works, and individuals.
Topics discussed include locations for post offices, staffing, changes in postal rates, and late delivery of mail.
Only three volumes appear to be extant. At the front of each volume is an alphabetical index. The name of the addressee is entered and the relevant folio number on which the correspondence is copied is noted. Where the suede binding still exists on the volumes, a label with "Letter Book" in gold is attached.
At some time after June 1851 a system was developed for copying outward correspondence into separate volumes mainly according to addressee. The first of such series known to be extant is CRS B4867.
In 2017, the microfilm copy of this series was digitized and uploaded to National Archives of Australia RecordSearch database. The digital image can be viewed by clicking the RecordSearch 'Digital item" icon.
