This series consists of British migrant selection documents forwarded to the Victorian Branch of the Department of Immigration for migrants settling in Victoria from the Immigration Office in London, Australia House. The records contain applications for assisted passage form L.E.M. 2 and medical examination report form K as the main documents.
This series also contains applications for assisted passage for juvenile migrants, aged 14 - 18 years, form L.E.M. 4 and papers for child migrants, form L.E.M. 3.
Some records were not culled prior to transfer to Australia and may include X-ray reports; applications for an overseas settlement and free passage; parent/guardians consent for juvenile migrants; birth certificate copies; doctors certificates; acceptance into Australian Defence Service; correspondence and teleprinter messages.
Some of the migrants were nominated by the Victorian State Government, others by private persons or organisations.
The records for one family are kept together; the general arrangement is alphabetical by name of migrant for each voyage of a ship or in chronological bundles covering several months for aircraft trips.
The Department's Victorian Branch registered these bundles in the then current correspondence series B4122, B919 or B922 prior to transfer to Australian Archives but retained the original chronological arrangement by either departure or arrival date. However, some records have been transferred as part of the correspondence files B922 ex MP1129/1 which include shipping and aircraft movement files. A few records for migrants travelling by aircraft overlap the subsequent series, B3593.
