This series consists of files containing chemical defence (Australia) notes dealing with research regarding preventative measures, reactions to weapons and chemicals, and medications to be used in chemical warfare. Many of the notes refer to B3136, CD Chemical Defence reports, single number series, 1943-?1946. The notes themselves consist of reports explaining details of experiments undertaken by the Laboratories and test results on animals and volunteers. Some records include photographs of fauna or equipment, othersinclude plans. Some of the contents of the files have been registered in an annual single number system with an alphabetical infix Z according to a purple stamp in the top right corner giving the file number and the registering agency "Munitions Supply Research Labs", or, in at least one case, "ChemicalDefence Board."
The notes are contained plain brown covers, the file number being given on the bottom of the front cover and on a protruding portion of the back cover. The contents are marked "Secret" and in somecases stamped"Downgraded to ...".
The notes were prepared at different locations including
Maribyrnong (Chemical Defence Section of the Munitions Supply Laboratories), Innisfail, and Proserpine (experimental stations of the Chemical Defence Board). The inter-relationship of personnel makes it difficult to determine when the records were kept by the chemical laboratory, and when by the Chemical Defence Board, or whether they served both. The latter is the mostlikely.
