Series note
This series comprises files for students undertaking training in Tasmania under the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme CRTS . The Scheme provided the necessary training for ex-servicemen and women to enable them to become re-established in suitable civilian
occupations. The Scheme was administered under the Re-establishment and Employment Act 1945 and gave financial assistance to certain categories of honourably discharged members who were selected according to suitability and need. The primary selection was made by the regional offices of CA49, Department of Post-War Reconstruction, which then referred selected applicants to CA274, Universities Commission, CO in Sydney. Besides university courses, diploma courses such as
occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery, public administration, commerce and infant welfare were open to applicants. (Extant files, however, only relate to degree courses). In some cases vocational guidance was provided. The scheme started to operate ona limited scale in March 1944.
The Scheme allowed full or part time study and paid all tuition and examination fees. It also provided a living and a dependant allowance only for full time students, and allowances for books, instruments and otheressential equipment.
The Files were arranged by single number in the "RT" Reconstruction Tasmania prefix. The "RT" numbers allocated by CA274, Universities Commission in Sydney following the stationing of a Branch officer in Hobartin 1947, who was responsible for then raising the files. In December 1952 the Hobart Branch was closed and the files transferred to CA592, Commonwealth Office of Education, State Office, Melbourne which continued the series. This office placed the file contents in light brown University Commission, Melbourne Branch file covers and started a new folionumbering run.
The file contents include application form, requests for and appraisals of payment; correspondence, "statistics cover" sheet and a form stating the return of basic documents from the University on completion of studies. Afinance sheet lists all payments.
