This series was the main correspondence series for the Antarctic Division from 1963 to 1972, covering topics such as general
administration, property, equipment, aviation, upper atmosphere and cosmic rays, glaciology, biology, medical matters, relations with other departments, laboratories, engineering publications, conferences, field work and committees. The series comprised policy files as well as general administrative files and includedsecret and confidential files. A three number registration system was used, the first number denoting primary subject classification, the secondary number denoting a secondary subject within the primary classification, and the third number being a file number allotted consecutively within these classifications. Primary numbers commenced from 201. This numbering system superseded that used for B1386 , correspondence files, multiple number series,1951-1963 which ranged for 101/1 - 161/6.
The files contain such material as correspondence, organisation charts, circulars, forms and statistical information, conference papers and pamphlets, and internal scientific reports.
Covers are buff with navy and light blue spine reinforcing,
labelled either "Department of External Affairs, Antarctic Division" or "Department of Supply, Antarctic Division", with a movement record on the front cover. Confidential files are marked with a red border and stamped "Confidential" on the cover.
Files from the previous series were top numbered into this series, and similarly files from this series were top numbered into the subsequent series. The series concluded in September 1972 when an annual single number series was introduced for correspondence files.
