History Prior/Subsequent to Transfer:
PTT. On 30/11/1878, the Military Force Act No.125 of 1878 was assented to being an Act for the Enlistment, Regulation and Discipline of a Permanent Military Force. Fort Largs and Fort Glanville were designed by Maj.Gen.Sir William F.D. Jervois, R.E., K.C.M.G., and Colonel Peter H. Scratchley, R.E. in 1878, and were built for the amount of 86-000 pounds, (not including Guns or Mountings). The official titles of the Forts at this period were "The North Battery" (Fort Largs)and "The South Battery" (Fort Glanville). Both Forts were used extensively for training purposes during both the 1914-18 and 1939-45 wars. On 17th February, 1941, Instructions were issued to move the Adelaide fixed Defences from Fort Largs to a new position to be called "Fort Malta", 600 yards north of Fort Largs, where the guns could be more easily camouflaged. The fixed defences remained at Fort Malta until the end of 1945, when they were returned to Fort Largs. Fort Glanville was disposed of in 1948, to the Zink Corporation, Broken Hill as a site for their holiday camp. All Ordnance being transferred to Fort Largs, Fort Malta was closed in 1945 and is now unoccupied. Fort Largs, however, is still used as a training establishment and as living quarters for permanent military personnel.
