Series note
Function and purpose
This series consists of Thirty-Four registers (volumes) of
letters received inwards. The volumes record all letters sent to the General
Post Office in Adelaide during the period 1878 to 1914. Each volume has an
alphabetical (A to Z) index recording
the Name (of person writing letter), Number of letter, Date of letter and
Subject (of letter). There are also sections within the volumes relating to the
Minister of Education, Appointments, Memorials, Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne,
Sydney, Perth, Wellington (New Zealand), Cape Town, Hong Kong, London, Berne,
Various, Australasian colonies, Railways Commissioners, General Traffic
Manager, Engineer in Chief and the Overland telegraph Line.
The letters are recorded under many headings including
staffing matters such as: illness, medical certificates, employment,
compensation allowance, application for leave, travelling expenses, vacancies
and fortnightly reports. There are also those entries where the public or other
organisations both local, interstate and overseas are involved such as: missing
letters, inspections of Post Offices, wrong delivery of letters, telegram
delays, refunds applied for, parcel inquires, ocean mail steamers hour of
arrival and dutiable packets.
