This series consists of 17 boxes of records which contain bound volumes of the conference proceedings, and folders of briefing notes for the Prime Minister and other Ministers, agenda papers and copies of proceedings. The folders of paper are ordered according to the particular conference they are related to. Neither the bound volumes, nor the folders form complete sets. The records have a self imposed control system for each item for retrieval purposes.
The records mostly deal with financial matters, although they cover a range of other issues on a less regular basis.
It is clear from the proceedings that some sessions were open (there was a decision to let the press stay). Some of this material (open sessions) is mixed in with closed session material in the bound volumes.
Correspondence file series of the Department and its predecessors dating back to 1901 contain copies of the minutes of meetings and background administrative details for the conferences.
Primarily, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has the main role in creating the records. However, Finance (CA 2140), and Teasury (CA 2141) are also involved in the proceedings.
Other Departments have been/can be involved on an ad-hoc basis eg. Department of Primary Industries and Energy (CA 5990) on wheat issues.
Records will continue to be created in this series until such time as the Premiers cease to have Premiers' Conferences. This collection is the only near complete set of Premiers' Conference proceedings/records available.
