Function and purpose
This Series
consists of RAAF Operations Record Books (Forms A50 and A51) commonly known as
Unit History sheets. These were used to record information on the daily running
of the squadrons and units.
The records
are enclosed in cloth covered folders and ring binders. Prior to 1985 the
records were recorded on forms numbered 'A50' and ‘A51’. These were superseded
in 1985 by A4 size pages that would allow the records to be produced on a 'Word
Processor'. The sheet entries are signed by the Commanding Officer. The
requirement to maintain the unit histories is set out in 'Defence Instructions
(Airforce) Admin 1 - 7'.
Prior to
1939 information subsequently consolidated and known as the Commanding Officer
Reports was incorporated into the Unit History Sheets. Between 1939 and 1988
the Commanding Officer Reports held in series A9435 were recorded separately.
The Commanding Officer Reports were reserved in most cases for recording
information of a more personal nature. In 1988 however it was decided to
incorporate the information contained in the Commanding Officer Reports back
into the Unit History Sheets.
These
diaries were especially important during World War II, as they recorded
establishment numbers and important events such as battle losses, aircraft
crashes, exercises, and officer movements. They form an intrinsic part of RAAF
history and are a good source document for researchers. Many of the squadrons
and units for which history sheets are held in this series have now been
disbanded.
