This series consists of those extant copies of designs submitted by unsuccessful candidates in the Federal Capital
Design Competition, 1911. There appear to be no copies extant beyond those of candidate no. 76. The original designs were drawn over a map of a contour survey of the Federal Capital Site by C.S. Scrivener,
District Surveyor of the Department of Home Affairs. It is apparent that multiple photographic copies of all designs submitted were produced. However not all have survived.
The majority of designs in this series have 2 copies. That many more were produced is clear from the system of
arrangement and control which imposes a two number system, the primary number being the candidate's allotted number
in the competition and the secondary element the copy number.
However, not all the copies are of drawings placed over the contour map. Some are panoramic views of the proposed city;
others are enlargements of sections. Many have the relevant candidate's allotted number stamped on them. The series was originally transferred to archival custody as CP895/3 in 1961 from the Lands and Surveys Branch
of the then Department of the Interior.
