Function and purpose
This correspondence file series documents the policy and administration of the Department of Defence. Its content reflects the main functions of the Department including the following areas: defence policy, joint service matters, finance, supply, production programs and capacity, disposition and organisation of the Defence Forces, higher appointments to the latter, weapons and equipment, defence research and development. Subjects treated under these groupings include appointments, departmental facilities, civil defence, relations with other countries, conditions of service, courts martial, disarmament, economic warfare, furniture and fittings, guided weapons, grants, information, medical and dental, press and publicity, recruiting, repairs and maintenance, security, statistics, treaties and agreements, war crimes and welfare.
A multiple number system is used to control this series. The primary numbers are limited to 1 to 300. The series includes a block allocation (primary numbers 250-260) devoted entirely to personnel matters. In addition, a single number with a 'TS' (Top Secret) prefix was allocated to those files classified top secret. This does not affect the multiple number arrangement.
This series also includes Sir Arthur Tange's personnel records parts one to nine. These files expand outside the date range of the series but have been slotted into A1945 which already holds personnel files with primary numbers 250-260.
Between 1955 and 1977 the Department of Defence provided the main administrative support for the Australian membership of SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organisation). The Department of Defence established the primary Australian SEATO registry and sub-registries in Bangkok and Australia. This series, in addition to containing information on SEATO generally, may also contain copies of some SEATO documents held in series A9946, A9947, A9954, A9955, A10022, A10025 and A10032.
