The vertical aerial photographs forming this series appear to have been taken for general topographic study and/or mapping purposes between 1 February and August 1971 by elements of the First Australian Task Force [1 ATF] located in the Nui Dat area of Phuoc Tuy Province in South Vietnam. The photographs cover quite extensive areas of selected regions within the Province, etc and include several re-runs in search for better quality.
Photographs taken during each Survey are housed separately in one or more sleeves made of heavy cardboard with red cloth binding along three sides. The "front" of each sleeve is usually endorsed with the Survey Number, the Run Number(s) comprising the Survey and the Photograph Numbers comprising each Run. The word "Blank" is also shown against some runs. Some covers are also endorsed with the name of the area covered by the Survey and the date it was flown. Most covers also show a "File No" [131 to 149] on the front and along the spine, but no related records have been identified to date. It is however quite likely that files, registers and/or further collections of photographs exist within the various record accumulations within the Department of Defence and/or Army and Air Force units. This is subject to further research.
Within the cardboard sleeves, photographs forming each run are held together by a narrow white paper sleeve in numerical sequence. The white sleeve is stamped with a series of standard headings of which the "Film" [Survey Number], "Run" [No], "Photos" [No's], "Date Checked" [22 Mar 84 and initial] and "Missing" [Photo No's] are entered.
During the check of 22 March 1984, the photographs were also
declassified to "UNCLAS" and the back of each photograph is endorsed to this effect.Quantity in agency custody
