Service Rolls of Queensland
Contingents despatched to the South African (Boer) War.
Function and purpose
This series consists of service
rolls from the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen’s Contingent for
special service in South Africa.
The two items are both service rolls
which indicate the men who declared to take part in the 6th
Queensland Imperial Bushmen’s Contingent. The men have taken an Oath of
Allegiance to the Sovereign by signing their names on the service roll to
participate in the war until their services are no longer required.
Physical characteristics
The service rolls are set out as a
table consisting of the battery or company number, the signatures of men and
officers in full, their rank, age, height, chest measure in inches, marital
status, the date of commencement of service, former service if any, the date
and number of general order when passed into ranks by staff officer, a witness
and remarks if any.
The columns for remarks and the date
and number of general order when passed into ranks by staff officer have not
been used in item one.
