The series consists of original records (correspondence files, reports, notebooks) which were transferred to the Commission's custody primarily by Australian Government Departments and Statutory
Authorities, for the Commission's research use.
Records were accessioned by the Commission in order of receipt, regardless of whether they were transferred directly by an agency or from the custody of Australian Archives. Each consignment was then allocated an R [Record] number.
For all consignments transferred to the Commission a 'Records Received' form was completed. The following details were recorded on this form: control number, date received, place received, owner (ie agency controlling), source (ie agency creating), contact officer, reason for transfer, restrictions, transcript reference, location, and description (ie physical characteristics, quantity, file reference, Archives control numbers, other, signature).
Copies of the 'Records Received' form were sent to all relevant agencies. The Commission maintained its own set of forms and checklists in four lever-arch folders, which were numbered within the series of housekeeping files (see CRS A6452, item HK 100 parts I-IV).
Individual items within each consignment were also allocated single numbers for control purposes; original item numbers were not used.
Items from CSIRO series 382 were transferred to the Royal Commission and became part of CRS A6456.
