Description
Files in this series were raised in four distinct blocks: Personal (files on particular people e.g. the Petrovs and witnesses to the Royal Commission), Subject, Operational and Policy. The Policy block also includes administrative files. Files in the first two blocks have buff-coloured folders with red (top secret), pink (secret) or green (confidential) striped borders, while files in the other two blocks generally have pink file covers. Some files are contained in black visidex folders.
The files include internal and external correspondence, copies of exhibits and statements made to the Royal Commission on Espionage, newspaper cuttings, reports, and reference material. At the conclusion of the Royal Commission on Espionage, the Royal Commission section which had been set up within ASIO and which created these files was abolished. Many of the files in this series were top-numbered into CRS A6119 and CRS A6122 at that time.
When these files were transferred to the National Archives of Australia the multiple number system of control was not used and the items were given a single running number for their control.
