Summary headingA571 Function and purposeThis is the main correspondence file series of the former Department of the Treasury [I]. The series commenced in 1901 and, until 1953, files were folded down the middle and filed in pigeon holes of suitable size. When files became too thick to fold they were left flat and stored separately, but their registration system was not affected. When transferred to archival custody, all folded files were opened out for flat storage and intersorted with the 'big' files. Since 1960, files transferred to Archival custody (except estrays) have had their movement card attached. If a file is returned to the agency the movement card is intersorted back into its place and used as file location control until file and card are once again transferred to Archival custody. Between 1960 and 1968 block allocations of numbers were made for compensation case files as follows: 60/5001 - 60/7607, 61/5001 - 61/7345, 62/5001 - 62/7722, 63/5000 - 63/7617, 64/6000 - 64/8758, 65/6000 - 65/8755, 66/6000 - 66/8885, 67/8000 - 67/11243, 68/9000 - 68/12479. This series was closed on 6 December 1976 when the new departments of Treasury [II] (CA 2141) and Finance (CA 2140) were created. Both started new correspondence file series on 7 December 1976 and both new series (A3730 Finance, A3720, Treasury) commenced with file 1977/1. When the new departments were created, the current portion of the series was split on a functional basis. A copy of the master file list, CRS A3715, was annotated to indicate which of the current files (1972-1976) were transferred to Finance and which were retained by Treasury [II]. Under the Administrative Arrangements of 24 March 1993, the responsibility for the Dartmouth Reservoir Agreement Act 1970 was transferred from the Department of Finance to the Department of Primary Industries and Energy (CA 5990). On 5 December 1994, records relating to compensation for Defence Service personnel were transferred to the custody of the Department of Defence (CA 46). The agency has provided an alphabetical list of those files which have been transferred to Australian Archives' custody. It can be found as an attachment to the annual single number consignment list. Temporary consignment A571/181 was assessed by Collection Review in 2004 and deemed subject to the Atomic Testing Destruction Freeze. It has therefore been retained permanently. This consignment is controlled by Comcare. Temporary consignments A571/134, A571/139 and A571/192 were destroyed on 31 March 2009. Temporary portions of consignments A571T1, A571/97, A571/98, A571/100, A571/103, A571/105, A571/106, A571/107, A571/109, A571/110, A571/111, A571/112, A571/113, A571/114, A571/115, A571/118, A571/122, A571/125, A571/126, A571/127, A571/137, A571/138 and A571/168 were destroyed in July 2009.
