A4409 – Aerial
photographs of the Jabiluka mine site and surrounds.
Function and purpose
The series consists
of aerial photographs relating to the Ranger and Jabiluka
mine sites and used by the Ranger Uranium
Environmental Inquiry (CA 2443) as reference material. Public hearings were
held in Sydney, Darwin, Mudginberri (near the
proposed mine site), Gove, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne between 9 September
1975 and 12 August 1976. The Inquiry
sat for a total of 121 days, received evidence from 303 witnesses and included
419 exhibits.
Three of the
photographs are of the proposed regional centre of the Ranger mine area and
three of the Jabiluka mine site. There is also four
smaller photographs (each measuring 24.5 x 23cm) glued together, showing the
terrain adjacent to the Ranger mine site.
Physical characteristics
As part of a
repackaging and data entry process in 2008, the photographs were re-housed and
located in map drawers.

A single number
system of control was imposed by the National Archives.

As
at February 2009, all items in this series held in the custody of the National
Archives have been entered onto its database RecordSearch.
Series history
The records were transferred into archival custody
in December 1978 by the Department of Transport and Regional
Services, Central Office (CA 8618).
Disposal history
These records were
transferred to the National Archives under GDA 14/37.1.2, to be retained as
permanent records. In July 2008, the records were confirmed RNA through the
Valuable Records procedure.
