Series note |
This series consists of individual case files dealing with
naturalization, resettlement, deportation and applications for passports. There are also some general files (for example, reports, building project plans, policy on transit visas etc).
Files dealing with naturalization usually contain Form 6, Application for Naturalization as an Australian Citizen; Form 7, Statutary Declaration by a Person Applying, or Intending to Apply, for Naturalization as an Australian Citizen; and Form 8, Renunciation of Former Allegiance. These Forms are issued under the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948-1967.
Also included in a naturalization file may be any or all of the following: Report on Application for Naturalization or Registration as an Australian Citizen, receipt of Certificate of Naturalization, newspaper cuttings notifying the intention to apply for naturalization, and related correspondence. Original passports may also be on file.
Resettlement files contain an International Refugee Organisation (IRO) Resettlement Medical Examination Form for each member of the family and an IRO Resettlement Registration Form, and related correspondence.
The file number and name of the individual or subject appear on the front cover of each folder.
This series was part of a large accession transferred to Archives by the Department of Immigration on 11 February 1961. The accession, controlled as CP900/1 comprised files of Classes 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 which between them covered the whole range of the alphabet which was the system by which the files were arranged (that is, lexicographically by surname).
At an early date the accession was physically separated into the six classes each group being re-accessioned with a new 'CP' number. They were all subsequently converted to the 'AS' system before finally being converted to the CRS system probably in 1974. The sequence of control was as follows:
Class 11 (Surnames A-C) became CP1018 then AS7/8 then A439
Class 12 (Surnames D-G) became CP1019 then AS7/9 then A440
Class 13 (Surnames H-K) became CP1020 then AS7/10 then A441
Class 14 (Surnames L-N) became CP1021 then AS7/11 then A442
Class 15 (Surnames O-S) became CP1022 then AS7/12 then A443
Class 16 (Surnames T-Z) became CP1023 then AS7/13 then A444
Though the surnames in each series conform generally with this scheme there are many exceptions. These may be errors or may be due to subsequent name changes due to marriage, anglicization, etc).
All the items of this series in Archvies custody as at October 1994 (that is consignment A439/1) have been entered in ANGAMII.
