FUNCTION AND CONTENT
This series is the second main file series of the Australian diplomatic mission in Batavia. It is most likely to have commenced in 1948 after the upgrading of the Australian Mission in Batavia to the status of Consulate-General in February, 1947.
The series is organised in a multiple number system with block allocations according to subject classifications as follows:
1 - 50 Staffing, Establishment, Administration
(13 - 50 unallocated)
201 - 250 Economical, Financial and Commercial
(216 - 250 unallocated)
251 - 300 Indonesia - Political
(276 - 300 unallocated)
301 - 350 Immigration, Travel, Travel documents, Nationality and Citizenship, Students, Repatriation, etc.
(318 - 350 unallocated)
351 - 400 Relations with Australia

USING THE SERIES
System of Arrangement and Control
The items in this series are arranged by their primary classification number, eg 252, as appears in the controlling record for this series, A4358.
Some economic and political group files were given a year prefix in addition to their subject classification number, eg 48/206, but this practice seems to have been discontinued shortly after the series began since no examples of year prefixing are apparent after 1948. This year prefix has been ignored for arrangement (sort order) purposes.
One file extant has a different prefix ? 28/209/1. This is the number that was originally written on the file cover. This file appears on the controlling record for this series (A4358) and matches both the primary number, 209, and title entered there. No evidence can be found to explain the use of this 28 prefix. It is possible that the prefix used for this file should have been 48.
Many files from the first system (series A4355) were top-numbered into this series.
