Series note |
This series consists of individual naturalisation case files. Each file usually contains Form 6, Application for Naturalisation as an Australian Citizen; Form 7, Statutory Declaration by a Person Applying, or Intending to Apply, for Naturalisation as an Australian Citizen; and Form 8, renunciation of Former Allegiance. These forms are issued under the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948-1967. Early files contain similar forms issued under the Nationality Act 1920-1946.
Also included in a naturalisation file may be any or all of the following: Report on Application for Naturalisation or Registration as an Australian Citizen, receipt for Certificate of Naturalisation, newspaper cuttings notifying the intention to apply for naturalisation; and related correspondence.
This series represents one of seven classes of correspondence files maintained by the Department of Immigration and its predecessors during the years 1939 to 1950, or for a portion of these years. The seven classes are as follows:
(1) General, passports,
(2) Restricted immigration,
(3) European migrants,
(4) Naturalisation,
(5) British migrants,
(6) Aliens registration,
(7) General administration.
