Summary heading
Function and purpose
These files
document the activities of various governmental bodies including the
Commonwealth, State and local Governments and foreign governments during
International Women's Year.
Some of these files
contain only a few folios (forwarding correspondence and photocopied material
outlining the Government's plans to mark International Women's Year). The
foreign Governments include France,
Canada, Spain, Singapore,
Israel and Jordan, and in Australia
the local bodies include Bankstown, Mudgee and Newcastle.
There are also
files in this series on some local government authorities (Libraries and Adult
Education Board) and various United Nations Organisations Committees. Some of
the programmes sent in by Australian local government bodies are submissions
asking for grants from the National Advisory Committee. These were referred on
to the appropriate body but the original file and submission were retained.

System of arrangement and control
The series is arranged by single number with a ‘GOV’
(Government) prefix. Some older files
show a ‘W/GOV’ prefixes – where presumably ‘W’ means ‘Women’ – but it appears
this usage was dropped at an early point. As the operation of the retrieval function
requires standard format, all items have been entered in the database showing
the ‘GOV’ prefix only , whether or not ‘W/GOV’ appears on the item itself.
