Function and purpose

Some of these files are in Department of the Prime Minister and others in Special Minister of State file covers. The files date from the original concept of International Women’s year. Files were raised for broad areas of women’s affairs eg women in the workforce, women and the media, aboriginal women, child care, and sexism in text books and the media.

The task force idea was later abandoned in favour of a less structured approach. The files however continued to be used as information files. Any material not directly connected with particular submissions or with correspondence from government agencies, and falling into these broad areas was placed on these files. They were then used primarily for reference.
