Summary heading
Personal
case files, single number series with 'BW' (Boer War) prefix.
Function and purpose
This series
consists of personal case files raised for pensions and other benefits such as funeral
expenses provided for servicemen from the Boer War.
The
documents in this series dates from 1938 - 1972.
Physical characteristics
The files
contain the original claim, medical reports, successive claims and applications
and related correspondence. Each file carries the person's name and service
number.
Almost all
files also have hand written in red next to or near the name where to find the
name on the Record of Australian Contingents to South Africa. This is believed
to be done so that they knew that the persons claiming monies actually served
in the South African War.
System of arrangement and control
Control symbols BW1 - BW143.
The prefix
BW stands for Boer War and the files were numbered according to dates.
Relationships with other records
MP69/9: It
seems that the red pen markings next to the names are related to the records in
the series MP69/9 - Book: Records of Australian contingents to the war in South
Africa 1899 - 1902 - however it has not been investigated in depth so cannot be
confirmed until further notice.
