FUNCTION AND CONTENT
This series consists of Naval personnel correspondence records.
USING THE SERIES
SYSTEM OF ARRANGEMENT AND CONTROL
Between 1968 and January 1995, a two number system was used comprising a primary number followed by the allocated service number. From February 1995, files were created using the allocated service number with an alphabetic prefix.Under the old system, each primary number represented a specific subject. A separate file was created for each occurrence eg allowances, travel, leave, promotions, removals etc. Consequently, up to thirty separate files had to be created for any one member. The secondary number indicated the service number allocated to the member when joining the Armed Services and remained with the member during their whole service career. Upon discharge, the allocated number was not re-issued. The new system, introduced on 6th February 1995, reduced the numbers of files relating to a serving member from thirty to just six files. Files created under the old system have been progressively converted into the new categories as files have been requested for action. The old file system and the subject groupings and file titles for the new system are listed below.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER RECORDS
Records for the Naval Personnel were previously raised in the record series A1813 and some of the information may also be obtained from series A4090 and A6721. The A2440 series is still the current series.
