Name Index Volumes, 1917-1951 (ex CP 602/1, AS12/8)
Function and purpose
The series covers a range of subjects dealt with by the Prime
Minister’s Department from 1904 to 1920, including amendments to Acts; public utilities
such as railways; banking and financial matters.
Initially, registry practice was haphazard but became formalized with the passing
of time. The registers do not usually show top-numbering. The index cards
record top-numbering but may not be complete.
Approximately 10% of the series is extant.
Many of the missing files will be found top-numbered into:
·
Series A457 ‘Correspondence files, multiple number
series, first system’ (accumulated between 1915-1923);
·
A458 ‘Correspondence files, multiple number series,
second system’ (accumulated between 1923-1934)
·
and A461 ‘Correspondence files, multiple number series,
third system’ (accumulated between 1934-1950)
A number of files were converted after 1917 to the first Secret and
Confidential series of the Prime Minister's Department - (ex accession number
CP 447/1) and thereafter to the second Secret and Confidential series. A very
few matters were raised directly from series A2 to the second Secret and
Confidential series (ex CP 447/2).
The index cards to the files, series A77, were subject to reorganisation in
the last years of the series; for the year 1921 refer to the first multiple
number series (A457).
