The series is a 5 volume alphabetical index. Each volume is titled Titles and Subjects for Literary, Musical and Dramatic Copyright Registration 1st January, 1916 to 14th October, 1936 A - C, D - H, I - O, P - S and T - Z, respectively. As with Series A1960 pages are numbered consecutively volume to volume, and they are bound but not printed, being composed of typed pages. There does not appear to be a printed equivalent of the series, nor is it clear whether this was a departmental reference tool or one for public use. The entries cross-refer to those in the Name Index Series A1962 and, for the relevant years, the handwritten Title Index for Music A1966.
Each entry records, in a table, title of work, type, number, and the applicant?s name (owner of Copyright) for items registered in the main Register Series A1957 and the corresponding exhibits in A1336, during the period 1916 - 1936. The tables are ordered alphabetically by the first three letters of the first word only - eg Peerless, Peep, Peerless, Peering and so on - so it is necessary to check thoroughly before concluding a title is not in an index. The tables also have cross - indexing under ?keywords?, which, as this is an alphabetical series, can greatly simplify the locating of titles where only part of a title is known; it is a particular type of registration: eg ?Games? has over 14 pages of entries; or where a title begins with a common word such as ?The?. For example:
In volume P - S Pedestrian - The Solitary - Book Joice M Nankivell 7,110, also appears under Solitary Pedestrian: The, as well as under its proper title - where ?The? is the sole determining word for alphabetical order - in the next volume.
While these indexes are quite bulky (about the size of a thick telephone book) and one or two of the covers are loose at the spine, they are clearer than the printed proofs in A8356 covering the same years, with the disadvantage, however, of having no dates against individual items. There are also no addresses given and reference to the main Registers in A1957 will be necessary to ascertain this information. Pseudonyms etc are given in brackets after registered names, where applicable, and author?s names where they are not the Copyright owner, are sometimes given in brackets after the titles.
