The series is a 3 volume alphabetical index. Each volume is titled Name Index of Applications for Registration of Literary, Musical and Dramatic Copyrights 1st January, 1916 to 14th October, 1936 A - F, G - Q and R - Z, respectively. Pages are numbered consecutively volume to volume. They are bound, but not printed, being composed of typed pages. There does not appear to be a printed equivalent of the series, nor is it clear whether this was a departmental reference tool or one for public use. The entries cross-refer to those in the Title Index Series A1962 and, for the relevant years, the handwritten Title Index for Music in A1966.
Each records, in a table, the applicant?s name (owner of Copyright), nature and title of work and number for items registered in the main Register Series A1957 and the corresponding exhibits in A1336, during the period 1916 - 1936. The tables are ordered alphabetically by surname only, not by the associated given names, so it is necessary to check thoroughly before concluding a name is not in an index. The tables also have cross - indexing under both surnames in cases of dual ownership or pen names etc, and by publishers where the applicant is the author only, which, as this is an alphabetical series, can necessitate circuitous reference to other volumes.
While these indexes are quite bulky, they are clearer than the printed proofs in A8356 covering the same years, with the disadvantage, however, of having no dates against individual items. There are also no addresses given, and it will be necessary for researchers to refer to the main Registers in A1957 to ascertain this information. The covers have come loose from the spines on two of the volumes and the first few pages are inclined to scrunch up, so they need some care in handling.
